Job once said, “But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? Man does not comprehend its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living…. It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver….Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies…It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air… God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells.” What the world needs now more than anything else is wisdom – Godly wisdom! Yet where can it be found?
Today we start a new series that I have titled, ‘Timeless Wisdom for the Thinking Person’. We move from the study of the Book of Revelation to the Book of Proverbs. I believe that the study of Proverbs will assist each one of us in being a church that will have the seven marks of a true and living church as required by Jesus. There is so much in this book that will challenge us! As we unpack it we will be taken to exactly where Godly wisdom can be found and then given counsel on how it can be applied.
We will learn what a proverb is and we will discover the five purposes of studying proverbs. We will learn about the author of many of the proverbs. We will be challenged in so many different ways. What I hope we will learn through our journey in the Book of Proverbs is how we must enquire of the Lord in all that we do. I hope we will begin to really understand our Heavenly Father’s heart and what pleases Him and what does not! I hope that we as a church will realise that the things of this world mean absolutely nothing when compared to the joys and blessings we can have as we attain wisdom that is completely at odds with all that surrounds us! I trust that you will enjoy our little venture into the Book of Proverbs! I trust also that through this study our lives will be truly transformed!
