It is part of human nature to trust and boast in our own ability to do good. But our perception of our own good is because we tend to compare ourselves to the wrong thing. Paul reminds the Philippian church that a person’s goodness and any earthly gain they’ve achieved are like rubbish compared to the infinite worth of knowing Jesus.
How does Jesus respond when He is given a calculated insult? What does He do when a woman goes out on a limb and breaks all cultural norms? In both cases, His response is far different than anyone in that time period would have expected. But the way He responds teaches us about the worth of human beings and the importance of forgiveness that results in love.
